The Yale Graduate School is one of the twelve schools comprising Yale University, and is the only one which awards the Ph.D. The Graduate School (called the Department of Philosophy and the Arts until 1892) was established in 1847 by an act of the Yale Corporation. In 1861, the Graduate School awarded the first Ph.D. degrees.
